This long-overdue greatest hits collection from Midnight Oil also seems like it comes a little too late. Since 1990's Blue Sky Mining they haven't come close to the wonderfully potent mixture of politics and pop. It appears that scrambling the chronology on the record was more to hide tracks like "Truganini" or "Surf's Up Tonight" than make a CD that flows naturally. Thankfully, every era is covered pretty evenly and, as I expected, the 2 new songs fall flat. Their entire 80s output makes up for it and all their strong songs are on this collection with nary an omission. Complementing the disc is a well-written essay as an Aussie writer shows how much national pride he has in this band as opposed to the usual historic layout.
