Midnight Oil are Australian champions of the Aborigine cause, though more famous for ridiculously tall frontman Peter Garrett's shiny pate and their 1989 hit Beds Are Burning. This, their 10th effort, flaps around in a number of styles, veering from sappy pop in Surf's Up Tonight to pompous heavy rock on Sins Of Omission without ever sounding truly at home. Those previously detected PC tendencies are strictly observed, however, with a terribly obvious Common Ground, while an attempt at country entitled One Too Many Times should never have been more than a pastiche made up for personal amusement. Garrett's passionate delivery adds some dignity to proceedings and Home, a duet with Emmylou Harris, is the best of a disparate bunch of tunes, which isn't saying all that much.
