Breathe

Reviewed by E!Online

On albums like Diesel and Dust and Blue Sky Mining, Midnight Oil topped the charts with a sound that was one part Springsteen, one part Greenpeace. With Breathe, the band's first album in three years, they've toned down the emotions and have nothing to replace them. Producer Malcolm Burn gives the album a warm, burnished sound, but without the band's histrionic passion, the music is reminiscent of early '80s new wave--all stiff tempos and strained vocals. Where Peter Garrett once was stentorian, he now sounds petulant. A professional but disappointing return.
