Breathe

Reviewed by Real Groove Magazine

That whole bigger than Texas mentality has kept Australian rock music in a time warp for the last 25 years and Midnight Oil are more guilty than most. Their new album Breathe is no exception. Standard rock songs with simple lyrics, maybe a little more understated than usual. "Time To Heal" would probably sit more comfortably on a Paul Kelly record, "Underwater," the definitive radio song, "One Too Many Times," a throwaway country rock tune in that lazy Neil Young vein, while "Home" is a beautiful slow ballad with Emmylou Harris sharing vocals. Garrett does his best to keep up but doesn't have the character of voice to do the song justice. Not so much of the eco-sermonfest this time though. Perhaps Garrett's finally realised that somebody's rain forests have to be cut down to build the guitars that make Midnight Oil the wealthy individuals they no doubt are. Such is life!
