Generally speaking, Midnight Oil records pre-10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 are the sound of a band honing its skills, trying to find itself, and succeeding infrequently. Their debut is worth mentioning only because it's a virtually worthless record. In fact, the leap they made between their first release and their great mid-'80s output is all the more astounding. Sounding clumsy and unsure of themselves, The Oil's debut sounds like a record they were told to make rather than one they wanted to make.
