A 21st birthday celebration usually contains moments of great embarrassment for those honoured. Not so this collection, which sees 16 songs from the Oils' 10-album catalogue alongside an intense pairing of new tunes ("White Skin Black Heart" & "What Goes On"). One by one they roll out, from 1979's "Back on the Borderline" through 1981's "Don't Wanna Be the One", 1982's "US Forces" and last year's "Surf's Up Tonight", mapping Midnight Oil's evolution from northern beach rock heroes to inventive, wildly eclectic ensemble of world renown. Over time they've added pop, folk, psychedelica, groove, country and electronica to their rock base, tied together by Peter Garrett's unique half-sung, half-spoken delivery and Rob Hirst's unfailingly cool harmonies.
